Carbon Credits Integration Generates Success In Water Treatment

March 2, 2023

Water treatment is the process of removing impurities and contaminants from water in order to make it suitable for various uses, such as drinking, irrigation, and industrial processes. The treatment process typically involves a combination of physical, chemical, and biological processes to remove contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, dissolved solids, and organic and inorganic compounds.

Carbon credit buying is a practice in which individuals, companies, or governments purchase carbon credits from organizations or projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The purchase of these credits is seen as a way to offset or balance out the carbon emissions produced by the purchaser. Carbon credits are typically sold in units that represent one ton of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) reduced or avoided.

The 45Q incentive is a tax credit established by the United States Congress to encourage carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. The credit provides up to $50 per metric ton of CO2 stored underground, and up to $35 per metric ton of CO2 used for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The incentive is intended to promote the development of CCS technology, which is seen as a key component of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change.

In some cases, water treatment and carbon credit buying may be linked through the implementation of water treatment projects that also have a positive impact on greenhouse gas emissions. For example, the construction of a water treatment plant that uses renewable energy sources or implements carbon capture and storage technology may be eligible for both carbon credits and 45Q incentives. Such projects provide both environmental and economic benefits, helping to protect and conserve water resources while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
