High-Quality Carbon Credits Require Evidence
Every carbon credit is intended to represent one metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent reduced or removed, but that shared unit does not make all credits interchangeable. Projects use different technologies, baselines, methodologies and monitoring systems. They also carry different environmental, social and delivery risks.
A responsible buyer therefore evaluates the project behind the unit. Price and registry eligibility matter, but neither one alone proves that a credit is suitable for a company’s climate strategy or public claims.
Start With a Clear Use Case
Before comparing projects, a company should decide why it is buying credits. The purchase may address residual annual emissions, support a contribution claim, secure future carbon removal or fulfill a specific program requirement. The intended use affects the appropriate project type, vintage, durability and documentation.
Credits should complement a credible emissions-reduction plan. Companies should measure their footprint, act on feasible Scope 1, 2 and 3 reductions and disclose the role credits play separately. This reduces greenwashing risk and gives procurement teams a clear quantity and quality requirement.

Additionality: Would the Result Happen Without the Credit?
Additionality is one of the most important and difficult quality tests. A project is additional when the carbon revenue enables a reduction or removal that would not otherwise occur. If the activity is already required by law, standard business practice or financially certain without credit revenue, issuing credits may not create a new climate benefit.
Different methodologies test additionality using financial analysis, regulatory surplus, common-practice assessments, barriers or standardized criteria. Buyers should understand which test was applied and whether the evidence remains persuasive in the project’s current market.

Quantification: Is the Ton Accurately Measured?
A credit should be based on a transparent methodology that defines the project boundary, baseline, monitoring requirements and calculation procedures. Conservative assumptions help prevent uncertainty from becoming over-crediting.
Buyers should ask what was measured directly, what was modeled and how missing data were handled. Leakage also matters. A project may reduce emissions in one location while causing activity and emissions to shift elsewhere. Credible accounting identifies material leakage and deducts it where appropriate.
Independent validation examines whether the project design meets the methodology. Verification reviews monitored results before issuance. These functions provide important controls, but buyers should still assess the methodology and the competence and independence of the parties involved.
Permanence: How Long Will the Climate Benefit Last?
Avoided emissions and carbon removals present different durability questions. Preventing a ton of emissions from entering the atmosphere is generally not subject to the same physical reversal risk as storing carbon in a forest, soil, product or geological reservoir.
Biological storage can be vulnerable to fire, disease, harvesting or land-use change. Programs may use monitoring, buffer pools, insurance or replacement requirements to manage these risks. Buyers should examine the strength of those mechanisms rather than assuming that every nature-based credit carries the same permanence.

No Double Counting
A climate benefit loses credibility if it is issued twice, sold to multiple buyers or claimed simultaneously in incompatible accounting systems. Registries assign unique identifiers and track issuance, transfer and retirement to reduce this risk.
Retirement is especially important. When a buyer uses a credit toward a climate claim, the unit should generally be retired so it cannot circulate again. Procurement records should connect the retired serial numbers to the company, reporting period and stated use.
International transfers can introduce additional accounting questions involving host-country authorizations and corresponding adjustments. The requirements depend on the market and claim. Buyers making cross-border or Paris Agreement-related claims should obtain specialized guidance rather than assume a registry entry resolves every accounting issue.
Environmental and Social Safeguards
A high-quality climate result should not be achieved by creating unacceptable harm elsewhere. Project review should consider land rights, community consultation, biodiversity, water, air pollution, waste, worker safety and other locally relevant effects.
Co-benefits can increase a project’s value. Agricultural projects may support soil resilience, while waste projects may improve local resource management. However, co-benefits should be supported by evidence and should not compensate for weak carbon accounting.
The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market’s Core Carbon Principles organize widely recognized quality criteria around governance, emissions impact and sustainable development. They provide a useful benchmark, although buyers remain responsible for determining whether a particular credit fits their needs.
A Practical Buyer Checklist
- Confirm the project, methodology, vintage, registry and intended claim.
- Review additionality, baseline, quantification, leakage and verification.
- Evaluate durability, reversal protections and lifecycle emissions.
- Verify unique issuance and retirement, then retain procurement records.
- Examine safeguards and substantiate any claimed co-benefits.
Buyers should also consider portfolio risk. A company may value a mix of project types, delivery dates and durability profiles rather than relying on a single supplier. Forward purchases require additional attention to delivery risk, remedies and the difference between contracted volume and issued credits.
Price Is a Signal, Not a Quality Test
Very low prices can indicate that a project type is abundant, inexpensive or facing limited demand, but price alone does not establish integrity. Expensive credits are not automatically high quality either. Technology costs, project size, location, co-benefits and market scarcity all influence price.
Procurement teams should compare price only after defining minimum quality requirements. A cheap credit that cannot withstand scrutiny may create reputational and financial risk. A well-documented credit that fits the company’s claim can provide greater long-term value even when its purchase price is higher.
